Fares, lifts, altitude, cloud, passes and booking. Ready to choose a Swiss Alps tour? The answers below settle most of what you need first.
Two answers matter more than the rest. Does your fare carry the lifts? The summit days and the rail days do; the village coach days and the valley walks leave them to you. And where does your day start? Most tours leave Interlaken, but some start in Zurich, Lucerne, Milan or even Lausanne. Every tour card says both.
How much do Swiss Alps tours cost?
Fares start at $89 for the Milan Red Train day. Mountain days with the lifts in the fare run $199 to $412 per person, and the Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen coach days $96 to $131, with the lifts extra. The private driver-guide day is $924 per group of up to 6.
Do the tours include the mountain lifts?
Only some do. The Jungfraujoch, Titlis and Schilthorn days, the First hike, the small-group rail days and the Milan Red Train days carry them in the fare. The Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen coach days, the private driver-guide day and the valley walks leave them to you, and the walks price them at CHF 25 to 28 a person.
Which tour goes to the Jungfraujoch?
The Jungfraujoch days start in Interlaken, a 7-hour day, or in Zurich, a 12-hour day. Each fare carries the Eiger Express cable car and the cogwheel train to the top, with a reserved seat and priority boarding. Fares run $313 to $320 per person.
Can I do a Swiss Alps tour from Zurich?
Yes. From Zurich you can take a 12-hour day to the Jungfraujoch, a 10-hour day to Mount Titlis with a stop in Lucerne, or a private 10.5-hour day through four countries with hotel pickup. The Jungfraujoch and Titlis days carry the lifts in the fare.
Is there a Swiss Alps tour from Lucerne?
Yes: a guided 10-hour coach day to Interlaken, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen from the operator's office in Lucerne. It gives you free time in the villages, and any lift you take from there is at your own cost.
How long do I get at the top of the Jungfraujoch?
At least 2 hours: the operator guarantees a minimum stay of 2 hours at the top, and one itinerary gives 2 hours 20 minutes. That covers the Sphinx terrace, the Ice Palace, the Plateau and Alpine Sensation, each weather permitting.
What should I wear on the Jungfraujoch?
The Jungfraujoch is under snow all year, so bring a warm jacket, shoes with a solid rubber sole and sunglasses. You cannot rent clothes or shoes at the top, so wear them from the start.
Are Swiss Alps tours suitable for children?
It depends on the day. Jungfrau Railways advise against the Jungfraujoch for children under 2. Tandem flights start at 6 years and 25 kg, and the e-bike day at 16. The private Zurich day brings a child seat or booster on request.
Can I cancel if my plans change?
Yes. Every tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. If the operator calls off a hike, a flight or the e-bike day for weather, you are offered a new date or a full refund.
What happens if it is cloudy?
The Jungfraujoch, Titlis and Milan days carry no weather clause, so they run in cloud, and the attractions at the top are marked weather permitting. The hikes, the tandem flight, the e-bike day and the Schilthorn afternoon can be called off for weather, and then you get a new date or a full refund.
Do I need a passport?
Yes for the Milan Red Train days and the four-countries day, which cross borders. The Jungfrau region days stay inside Switzerland. Check the entry rules for your own nationality before you book.
Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover a tour fare?
No: a pass does not reduce any tour fare here. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the public trains and takes 50% off the mountain railways to the Jungfraujoch, the Schilthorn and Titlis. If you already hold one, compare the tour fare with going up on your own.
Which Swiss Alps tour is best for hikers?
The guided First and Bachalpsee hike carries the rail pass and the First gondola in its fare. The Grütschalp to Mürren hike adds the waterfalls inside the mountain but leaves the lifts to you at CHF 28 a person. Both ask for moderate fitness.
Can I book a private tour?
Yes. The driver-guide day from Interlaken costs $924 per group of up to 6, and you set the route with your guide. The four-countries day from Zurich is private too, with hotel pickup, at $301 per person.
Is paragliding in Interlaken safe for beginners?
It is a tandem flight: a professional pilot flies and you get a safety briefing first. You need to be able to run 40 m at take-off and weigh 25 to 100 kg. The flight lasts 10 to 20 minutes, from a launch above Beatenberg down to Interlaken.
How long is a Jungfraujoch day?
7 hours from Interlaken and 12 hours from Zurich. Most of the difference is the drive to and from Grindelwald, so from Zurich you trade five hours of coach for not moving hotel.
Is the Jungfraujoch advised in pregnancy?
Jungfrau Railways advise against it from the seventh month or with a high-risk pregnancy, and for children under 2, because of pressure and fluid intake at altitude. The tandem flight is not recommended in pregnancy either.
Is Mount Titlis open in 2026?
Yes, with limits. From June 2026 building works cut the tour's summit visit to about an hour, and the Rotair revolving cable car is closed from 17 August to 11 December 2026. Until then you ride up on Titlis Connect.
What does the Schilthorn afternoon include?
A minivan from Interlaken to Stechelberg, the cable cars to the summit and back, Spy World and the Walk of Fame. You get about 2 hours at the top, and the Thrill Walk at Birg is optional. It starts at 1 p.m. in a group of up to 6.
What is Kleine Scheidegg?
The pass below the Eiger, reached by cogwheel train from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. The small-group rail day spends about 2 hours there and does not continue to the Jungfraujoch.
Does the Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen day go up a mountain?
No. It gives you free time in Grindelwald, about 4 hours from Interlaken, and a shorter stop in Lauterbrunnen. First, Pfingstegg or Kleine Scheidegg are optional, at your own cost, and the guides suggest what to do with the time.
Does the glass-roof bus tour start in Interlaken?
No. It boards at Lausanne-Vennes metro station, opposite Aquatis, because the bus comes from Geneva. It then gives you free time in Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, with the longest stop, about 2.5 hours, in Interlaken.
Does the Red Train on the Milan day need a seat reservation?
No, and you cannot make one: group seats on those trains cannot be reserved in advance. The Milan days ride the regular red trains of the Rhaetian Railway, not the Bernina Express, which is a separate panoramic train with compulsory reservations.
What is the difference between the Bernina and Albula options?
On the Bernina option you ride the Red Train from St. Moritz to Tirano, with free time in Tirano and a headset for the guide's commentary. On the Albula option you stop at the Landwasser Viaduct viewpoint instead. Either way a Red Train ticket is in the fare.
Where do the Interlaken tours meet?
Most meet in central Interlaken: at the OUTDOOR Interlaken shop at Höheweg 95, the paragliding shop at Höheweg 125 or the bike shop at Höheweg 133. The small-group rail days, the hikes and the Schilthorn afternoon meet at Interlaken Ost station.
Are meals included?
Only on the e-bike day, which carries a Swiss mountain picnic in the valley. Every other fare leaves food and drinks to you. On the First hike you can buy lunch by card at First.
How big are the groups?
From your own party on the private days, and 6 to 8 on the Schilthorn afternoon and the valley walks, up to 48 on one Jungfraujoch day and 60 on one Milan day. Each card says the group size where the listing gives it.
What languages do the guides speak?
Every guide speaks English. The Best of Switzerland Tours coach days also run in Spanish, some Jungfraujoch days add Mandarin, and the four-countries day offers German and Hindi.
Can I bring a stroller?
Some listings allow one: the First hike, the Lauterbrunnen and Mürren rail day, the private driver-guide day and one Jungfraujoch day from Interlaken. The Milan Red Train day does not.
Can I join a tour in a wheelchair?
The listings that say so mark their tours as not wheelchair accessible, and none says the opposite. Ask the operator before you book, and read the Jungfraujoch advice on fitness at altitude.
Is the e-bike tour for beginners?
No. A riding test comes first, and anyone judged a beginner is excluded without a refund. You must be at least 16 and weigh no more than 110 kg.
How far ahead should I book?
As soon as your dates are firm. The hikes, the Schilthorn afternoon and the tandem flights run in small groups, and every fare refunds in full up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs you little.
Should I tip the guide?
Gratuities are excluded on most listings, so a tip is up to you. Nothing on the day asks for one.
What is the best month for a tour in the Alps?
Summer, if you want the hikes and every lift running. Trümmelbach Falls opens from early April to early November, and mountain lifts close for maintenance weeks outside the main seasons, so check the one you want before you book.
