Ninety minutes, and the lakes below your feet

Beatenberg to Interlaken in up to 20 minutes of air

Your flight starts on the hillside at Amisbühl, above Beatenberg, on the north side of Lake Thun. The van gets you there in 20 to 30 minutes from the shop in town. You land on the Höhematte, the big meadow in the centre of Interlaken, so the day ends a few minutes' walk from the shops and the station.

Weighing up a Swiss Alps tour and short of time? This is the one that fits into a morning or an afternoon. You spend more time on the ground than in the air, but the 10 to 20 minutes up there are the ones you will talk about.

The safety briefing and the run

At the launch you get a safety briefing that tells you what to do at take-off and landing. You need no experience, and you do nothing technical. What you must do is run: a few strides downhill until the wing lifts you, and you need to be able to manage about 40 m. Your pilot steers the wing for the whole flight.

Wear good walking shoes. Sandals or slip-ons make the run harder than it needs to be.

What you see: Lake Thun, the Jungfrau

Once you are off the slope, Interlaken opens out below you on the flat land between two lakes. Lake Thun lies on one side and Lake Brienz on the other. To the south, the three peaks of the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau stand along the skyline. On a clear day, you can follow the valleys you would ride into on a train day.

A paraglider has no engine, so the flight is quiet: you hear the wind and your pilot, and little else.

Your pilot films and photographs the flight. You can buy the pictures at the end, for CHF 40. The fee is not in the fare, so bring a card or francs if you want them.

How the ninety minutes run

1. The shop in Interlaken. Check in at Höheweg 125, opposite the Hotel du Nord.
2. Van to Beatenberg, 20 to 30 minutes. Up the north shore of Lake Thun to the launch.
3. The briefing. Your pilot explains the run and the landing.
4. The flight, 10 to 20 minutes. Over the town, between the two lakes.
5. The landing field. Down on the meadow in the centre of Interlaken.

What the flight fare covers

Meeting at the shop in Interlaken

You check in at the Paragliding Interlaken shop at Höheweg 125, opposite the Hotel du Nord. Hotel pickup is not in the fare, so walk to the shop: it sits on the main street between the two stations. If you come by car, the public car parks nearby are not free, so bring coins.

The flight ends on the landing field in the middle of town. From there you walk back to the shop, your hotel or the station.

Know before you go

• Check your weight. You need to weigh 25 to 100 kg, or no more than 80 kg on the 7:15 a.m. slot.
• Children fly from six. They also need to weigh at least 25 kg.
• You must run. Be able to run about 40 m for the take-off.
• Wear good shoes. Walking shoes with a grip, not sandals.
• Photos cost extra. The pictures and video are CHF 40, paid at the end.
• Weather decides. If the operator grounds your flight, you get a new date or a full refund. Flying is not recommended in pregnancy.
